Last night, I took some time to brainstorm some ideas for our “Renovate and Innovate” submission. Below are some ideas I would like to present for consideration by our group. I am also very excited to see what ideas you all present and look forward to our innovation taking home the prize.
Integrating electrocardiograms (ECG) and electronic health record systems (EMR). This idea was retrieved from the suggestion box, and when I conducted a little research, here is what I found. Some of the benefits of integrating this process with the EMR system include fewer delays in the reading of ECG by the provider, which improves the quality of patient care. Waste reduction, including wasting paper to print ECG and wasting time necessary to notify the provider of the results and making the results available for his/her review (Kohli, 2021).
When speaking with the manager and research and development team yesterday, a suggestion that was brought up was the implementation of a virtual sitter service for hospitalized patients who are at high risk for falls. This service would not only result in cost savings for the hospital by way of allowing one staff member to monitor several patients simultaneously, but it would also improve patient safety (Hicuity Health, 2021).
I recently visited a family member hospitalized in a neighboring hospital and noticed they were using a barcode medication administration (BCMA). This prompted me to research further, and I found a study published in the Health Journal (2019), which demonstrated the use of a BCMA system resulted in a 96% reduction in dispensing errors and an 80% reduction in documentation errors.
According to a 2018 analysis of Medicare patients, approximately 8.2 million members had wounds (Sen, 2019). This led me to further investigate the implementation of a Tele-Wound Consulting Service. This system would allow patients to receive a higher level of care, accurate wound assessment, and the selection of the best wound care regime (Today’s Wound Clinic, 2020). Implementation would improve patient outcomes and result in cost savings for both the patient and payers due to faster healing times.
I would like to thank each of you for taking the time to review these suggestions, and I hope these ideas help to spur deeper thought into what our group submission will be. I look forward to speaking with you all soon.
